Amritsar: The state unit of the Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) on Thursday declared its former state vice-president Rajinder Mohan Singh Chhina as party candidate from the Amritsar Lok Sabha seat for February 4 by-poll.
Rajinder Mohan Chinna, has been active in the BJP for the past several years, had contested the 2007 assembly elections from Amritsar (West) but was defeated by Congress nominee OP Soni.
Interestingly, Rajinder Mohan Chhina, who is honorary secretary of the Khalsa College Governing Council, is also a staunch opponent of former BJP MP Navjot Singh Sidhu.
It is asserted that his proximity with Union finance minister Arun Jaitley and Badal Dal leaders, especially cabinet minister Bikram Majithia, played a pivotal role in getting him the ticket.
