Tarn Taran: A Congress supporter named Jagjit Singh was critically injured outside polling station in an alleged firing by Desa Singh, SAD (Badal) sarpanch of village Lalu Ghuman, and his armed aides.
Sources said the SAD (Badal) sarpanch took some voters on his vehicle to ensure their vote to his party. When they reached the SAD (Badal) stall to take voter slips, few Congressmen whose stall adjoined to that of SAD, alleged him that he has lured the voters with money.
Protesting Congress workers told them that they would not let them to vote with this way. This led to tension between them and Desa Singh who was also accompanied by former sarpach Sarbjit Singh and exchanged heated arguments with Congress workers at around 3.45 pm.

The situation turned violent when the SAD sarpanch called his aides who had revolvers and other firearms. In the clash, they started firing. a bullet hit Jagjit’s right leg below the knee. He was immediately hospitalized at local civil hospital. After providing him first aid, the doctors referred him to Guru Nanak Hospital Amritsar where his condition is reportedly stable.

Pertinently, heavy security arrangements were arranged at the polling station and policemen as well as troops of Border Security Force (BSF). Despite this they failed to restrain the Akali supporters from making deadly attack.
After some time, senior superintendent of Police (SSP) Harjit Singh, superintendent of Police (SP) Gurnam Singh and station house officer of Jhabhal police station Joga Singh rushed to the spot. All the voters dispersed after the violence took place.
While speaking to HT, SSP Harjit Singh said strict action has been taken by booking around 20 persons including sarpanch Desa Singh and former sarpanch Sarbjit Singh. He said Gurpreet Singh, Malkit Singh, Balram Singh and Bagga Singh have also been named in the case, while around 15 unknown persons have been included in the case.
The station house officer said a case has been registered under the sections 307, 188, 148 and 149 of Indian Penal Code and relevant sections of Arms Act. However, all the accused are absconding and hunt has been launched to nab them.
