Ottawa, Canada (Manjit Singh): The Sikh Sangat of Ottawa (Canada’s Capital) marked the beginning of month long Sikh Heritage Month celebrations at the Ottawa City Hall on Sunday (April 02). This coincides with the Vishaki celebrations of the Sikh Sangat for the entire month of April wherein numerous cultural and religious programs will follow.
Today Ottawa witnessed the raising of the Nishan Sahib which is a symbolic representation of the Sikh Values, namely, courage, equality and self-less service to the community in which the Sikhs reside. The Nishan Sahib was raised by the Panj Pyare.
To mark the beginning of the Sikh Heritage Month, the Mayor of Ottawa, Jim Watson released the plaque and officially read out and proclaimed the start of the month long Sikh Heritage celebrations in Ottawa.
In his address he highlighted and commended the contributions of the Sikhs as remarkable citizens in all round development of the city of Ottawa, building the community and Canada, the Sikhs adopted as home away from home between the Pacific and Atlantic on the north western hemisphere about 150 years ago.
The journey of the Sikhs for the last 150 years as Canadian citizens will also be presented as The Canadian Sikh Mosaic at the City Hall on Friday, 21 April, 2017. The Mosaic is a pioneer attempt by the Sikh Sangat of Ottawa to depict the rich history and exquisite art of the Sikhs – a royal tribute to the saint soldier. Other performances will include Sikh Martial Art “Gatka” and a “Kavi Darbar” to nourish the young minds back to the roots of Sikhi and human values.
Last year, thousands attend the first hoisting of the Nishan Sahib in Ottawa and this year we are expecting a larger presence. Many other artists from far and near will have their performances and so will the Sikh women who are coming forward with a women’s panel to encourage women’s participation in The Ottawa Community.
Also some other programs that follow April 2’s starting ceremony worth mentioning here is the hoisting of the Nishan Sahib at the Parliament Hill tomorrow, Monday, 3 April 2017 at 10:30 am. Citizens, MP’s, Ministers and the Sikh Sangat from all over Canada is expected to attend to witness this historic landmark.
This will be followed by a special Sikh Heritage Month Gala on Parliament Hill on Saturday, 22 April, 2017 from 6:00 pm. Dignitaries from all over the world will be attending to participate in ‘Tegh Talks” to share their Sikh experiences and how they have been able to use Sikh values to positively contribute to the countries and communities they adopted as home.
The closing ceremony will be at the Ottawa Sikh Society (Ottawa Gurudawara Saibh) on Sunday, 23 April 2017. For more in-depth details and updates please follow our facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/ottawasikhiacademy/
