Milton Keynes: The Sikh Council UK said in a statement issued on Monday (June 10) that its Executive Committee held a meeting at Gurdwara Ramgarhia Sabha, Milton Keynes on Saturday 8th June.
The Sikh body said that its executive team came from a wide range of age groups; the experience and knowledge of elders partnered with the fresh ideas and enthusiasm of youth members catalysed success.
“Through the process of co-option, current female members constitute a quarter of the Executive Committee. This historic step is the first amongst many more to empower the role of Sikh women as identified by the teachings of our faith and history”, said Sikh Council UK.
It said that its first priority is to actively support organisations that work to raise the respect given to Sri Guru Granth Sahib Jee. Sikh Council UK will also be taking a proactive lead in examining and identifying all aspects surrounding this.
The diaspora Sikh group further said: “[l]eading up to the 550th Parkash Purab of Guru Nanak Dev Jee, Sikh Council UK will work closely with partner organisations to support events and projects dedicated to this momentous celebration. We are currently working to develop the representation of UK Sikhs in celebrations at both Nanakana Sahib (Pakistan) and Sultanpur Lodhi (India)”.
It further said that [w]idespread approval has been given to Secretary General Jatinder Singh’s proposal to establish a ‘School Affairs Committee’ supporting existing and upcoming Sikh schools.
“This administration pledges to rise above any partisan bias – all political engagement will be done with a central view to target the interests of the Sikh community in the UK and internationally”, Sikh Council UK said.
