Attack on Dera Sauda Sirsa head: Four gets bail; sentence suspended by High Court

Chandigarh/Punjab (November 10, 2012): It is learnt that four Sikhs who were convicted for participating in an alleged assassination bid against Dera Sauda Sirsa (DSS) head Gurmeet Ram Rahim, have been granted bail by Punjab and Haryana High Court.
It is notable that Dera head’s conclave was reportedly attacked near Neelokheri, Haryana on February 02, 2008. Eight persons, Swaran Singh KotDharmu, Mohinder Singh Asandh, Gurinder Singh Ghona, Dharminder Singh Bhinda, Hoshiar Singh Jhandakalan, Jasbir Singh Jassa, Parveen Kaur Bhamme Kalan and Bakhshish Singh Baba were charged in this case.
The trial court had convicted seven persons in this case; Parveen Kaur the only one who was acquitted after trial.
Swaran Singh Kotdharmu, Mohinder Singh Asandh and Bakhshish Singh Baba were sentenced to 10 years imprisonment where as other were sentenced to undergo five years imprisonment.
As the appeal against the decision is pending in the Punjab and Haryana High Court, the HC has reportedly suspended the sentence of four persons and granted bail to Gurinder Singh Ghona, Dharminder Singh Bhinda, Hoshiar Singh Jhandakalan and Jasbir Singh Jassa.
The decision is taken by the bench of Justice Rameshwar Singh Malik of Punjab and Haryana High Court.
It is expected that they would be released from Karnal Jail in coming days.
The Dera Sauda Sirsa (DSS) head Gurmeet Ram Rahim, in 2007, had attempted to personify himself as Tenth Sikh Guru, Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji. Personification is a prohibited practice in Sikh religion. An edict was issued by Sri Akal Takhat Sahib against blasphemous activities of DSS and it’s head. Nilokheri attack was considered to be outcome of Sikh outrage against the dera head and his propaganda against Sikh history and tradition.
