Red rivers of Punjab – A history of violence & corruption under Badal regime
by Canadian Sikh Coalition
Prakash Badal is a politician in Punjab, India whose name will forever be remembered in the region’s political history. Badal has served a total of five terms as Chief Minister beginning in 1971 when he was elected as the youngest Chief Minister in any Indian state. After winning the 2007 election he was re-elected in 2012 making him the only Chief Minister in Punjab’s history to win two consecutive terms of power.
At first glance, one would assume Badal’s rise to power would be a result of his charismatic personality, good governing strategies and commitment to the people. However, a closer look at Badal’s political reign provides a much darker reality. Prakash Badal has been committing human rights violations, torture, and exploitation for many years under the veil of democratic rule. From his various terms in power there have been countless casualties of police torture, ruthless acts of repression, and large amounts of wealth accumulated through unscrupulous means.
The Canadian Sikh Coalition (CSC) strives to protect the rights and freedoms of Sikhs internationally and advocates redress. Aiming to provide a national and international perspective, CSC uses education and research to develop, stimulate and enhance knowledge of global Sikh issues that are of primary concern to Sikh Canadians through the dissemination of information.
The following report, “Red Rivers of Punjab: A History of Violence & Corruption Under the Badal Regime,” documents the human rights violations that have taken place and continue to take place under the Badal regime. By providing a detailed account of Badal’s violent tactics, the Canadian Sikh Coalition aims to advocate for the protection and promotion of human rights internationally and establish a diplomatic channel to voice the concerns of Canadian Sikhs.
