India avoided hosting of Tricolour flag at Lal Chowk this year

Srinagar (January 27, 2010): Amidst all claims regarding taking control over situation in Kashmir, it seems that India feared August 2008 like situation in Lal Chowk of Srinagar and dared to hold its’ Tricolour Flag, here, on 26^th of January, observed as Republic Day by Indian State. ‘The tradition of hoisting the Tricolour at Lal Chowk, Srinagar’s main city square, was not carried out this year, which also witnessed incident-free Republic Day celebrations in the state. ‘ says a media report.

A tradition of hosting this flag at Lal Chowk was started by BJP at the end of its Ekta Yatra in 1991 and continued by security forces since then.

In 15 August 2008 on the eve of Independence Day of India Kashmiris protesters forced the removal of India’s flag and demanded ‘Azadi’ (Freedom) from alleged imperial rule of India. A wave of democratic protests was on its’ peak in 2008 and it seems that this year’s move of not hosting Indian flag at Lal chowk is an outcome of fear regarding revival of such movement afresh.
