Right group urge Obama to raise 1984 Sikh genocide issue; Sikhs to converge before White House on September 27

New York, USA (September 20, 2013): Ahead of September 27 meeting between President Obama and PM Singh, Sikh rights groups have written to US President urging him to question PM Singh regarding continuous impunity extended by his government to Congress Party leaders who were involved in genocidal attacks on Sikhs during November 1984.

The rights group “Sikhs for Justice” (SFJ) has been lobbying with the US administration on the issue of denial of justice to the victims of November 1984 Genocide and to pressurize Indian government to punish the perpetrators who have been enjoying positions in the Indian Government.

In its communiqué to Obama administration, SFJ cited the cases of Kamal Nath, Jagdish Tytler and Sajjan Kumar

the congress party leaders, who have been enjoying seats in the parliament instead of being prosecuted despite ample evidence of their involvement in organizing violence against Sikhs during 1984.

The letter reminds Obama administration of its response to Sikh Genocide Petition tabled before the White House in December 2012 with more than 45,000 signatures, in which US Government acknowledged the systematic violence against Sikhs, by stating that, “during and after the 1984 violence, the United States monitored and publicly reported on the grave human rights violations that occurred and the atrocities committed against members of the Sikh community”. Condemning November 1984 killing of Sikhs, the response noted that “we continue to condemn — and more importantly, to work against — violence directed at people based on their religious affiliation”.

According to Gurpatwant Singh Pannun, legal advisor to SFJ, since PM Singh heads the party that orchestrated the 1984 violence which has been acknowledged by the White House, the Sikh community has approached President Obama to raise the issue of impunity and denial of justice during his meeting with PM Singh. We want to hold the perpetrators of 1984 and their protectors, accountable before the international community for their crimes against humanity, added Pannun.

During Obama-Singh meeting on September 27, Sikh groups will hold a justice rally in front of White House. The rally is aimed at exposing the incessant policy of impunity practiced by PM Singh’s government towards the perpetrators of November 1984 Sikh Genocide. The rally is supported by Sikh organizations and management committees of Gurudwaras across the United States and Canada.
