Support Sikh right to join U.S. Army this Veterans Day: Sikh Coalition

November 12, 2013 | By

New York, US (November 12, 2013): As the U.S. celebrates Veterans Day, the Sikh Coalition is still fighting for the right of all Sikhs to serve in the U.S. Armed Forces.

“Today, we honor all of the men and women who bravely serve our country, but are also reminded that Sikhs remain presumptively banned from joining the U.S. Armed Forces with their articles of faith intact. Only through the extensive advocacy efforts of the national sangat, supporters like you and the Sikh Coalition, have three Sikhs been granted historic permission to serve in the U.S. Army with their religiously mandated turbans and uncut hair” reads a newsletter by the Sikh Coalition (dated: November 11, 2013).

The Sikh Coalition newsletter further reads: “For their service to our great nation, we salute Major Kamaljeet Singh Kalsi, Captain Tejdeep Singh Rattan, and Corporal Simran Preet Singh Lamba. Each of these proud soldiers has shattered stereotypes, won awards and promotions, and demonstrated that Sikhs can be excellent soldiers if they are simply given an equal opportunity to prove their abilities”.

The Sikh Coalition has urged to the people that if they believe all Sikh Americans deserve an equal opportunity to serve the U.S. they love, then they should celebrate Veterans Day by signing and sharing Sikh Coalition’s petition to President Obama.
