New Delhi, India (June 09, 2014): Rejected by people of Amritsar in recent Lok Sabha elections, Union Finance Minister and BJP politician Arun Jaitley has been appointed as the Leader of the House in Rajya Sabha, while Congress’ veteran Ghulam Nabi Azad has been made the Leader of the Opposition in the Upper House. Former Punjab chief minister captain Amrinder Singh had defeated him with a margin of over 1 lakh votes.
Congress president Sonia Gandhi had on Sunday nominated Ghulam Nabi Azad as leader of party in the Rajya Sabha and named Anand Sharma as the deputy leader of the Upper House.
Meanwhile, former Punjab chief minister Amarinder Singh, who defeated Arun Jaitley in Lok Sabha elections, has been made the Deputy Leader of Congress in Lok Sabha while the young leader Jyotiraditya Scindia has been brought in as chief whip of the party.
Commenting on the development, Aam Admi Party (AAP) MP from Sangrur said, “It is tragedy of the Indian democracy that the people who are rejected by the people are enjoying power via Rajya Sabha. There should be a law that a defeated candidate neither should be given berth in the cabinet nor should be given important status like governor or leader of upper house”.
