AISSF takes on Harmandar Gill for defending Congress on Sikh pogrom 1984

March 15, 2014 | By

Khadoor Sahib, Punjab (March 15, 2014): Taking a strong exception to Congress candidate from Khadoor Sahib parliament constituency, Harminder Singh Gill’s alleged defence of Congress (I) on November 1984 massacre of Sikhs, All India Sikh Students Federation (AISSF- Peer Mohammad) has announced to issue a “White Paper” on Harminder Gill’s past and the continuous practice of impunity extended by Sonia Gandhi to those who orchestrated violence against Sikhs after the assassination of Indira Gandhi.

Harminder Singh Gill is a former member of AISSF and he was heading a faction of Federation before joining the Congress party.

Harminder Gill, who is fielded in Lok Sabha elections by the Congress party from Khadoor Sahib constituency, recently stated that “President Sonia Gandhi and Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh has already expressed the regret over the 84 anti-Sikh riots” and claimed that “Congress government has spent Rs.715 crores for rehabilitation for the 1984 Sikh victims”.

Harminder Gill also declared “I had been member of AISSF but I am not a militant or I never had supported terrorism”.

AISSF president Karnail Singh Peermohammad said that Harminder Gill headed AISSF through most critical period during early 1990s when Indian Security Forces were conducting counter insurgency operations under the command of DGP KPS Gill.

“Throughout the counter insurgency operations era, AISSF headed by Harmandar Gill remained the prime target of the security forces. AISSF was banned in June 1984 after the invasion of Sri Harminder Sahib by Indian Army and thousands of its members were tortured and extra judicially killed,” Peermohammad said.

He stated that during 1990s Harmandar Gill actively campaigned for separate state for Sikhs and under his command thousands of Federation members laid their lives for the cause supported by Harmandar Gill at that time.

“Now after joining the Congress(I), he is acting as devil’s advocate and justifying the actions of Congress (I), the party responsible for extra judicial killing of Federation members. Compensation to the 1984 Sikh genocide victims cannot be the alternative to the justice,” Peermohammad argued.

“It is unfortunate that for meager political career Gill is now making statements which are in stark contrast to his role and campaign against Congress (I) policies in 1990’s.” he added.
