New Delhi, India (February 06, 2014): As per information available with the Sikh Siyasat News (SSN) the Arvind Kejriwal government in Delhi is expected to decide today (February 06, 2014) about forming a Special Investigation Team or SIT to probe the November 1984 Delhi Sikh massacre related cases.
It may be recalled that Sikhs were targeted with genocidal violence throughout India during the first week of November 1984. In Delhi alone thousands of Sikhs were burnt alive by genocidaries, but the culprits were never brought to justice during last three decades.
Last week, Aam Aadmi Party leader and Chief Minister of Delhi Arvind Kejriwal discussed the matter of formatting a SIT to investigate the cases of November 1984 Delhi Sikh massacre related cases with Delhi’s Lieutenant Governor Najeeb Jung. Approval of L-T is required for the constitution of the SIT.
According to NDTV: [t]he SIT will, in a time-bound manner, look into why 600 First Information Reports or FIRs were registered in the 1984 violence of which 241 were reportedly closed by the police.
“The SIT will also inquire into allegations of evidence ignored by the police and expedite the process in cases where chargesheets were not filed despite sufficient evidence” NDTV has reported further.
On February 04, a former Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) joint director reportedly told NDTV that the investigating agency may have come under pressure to give a clean chit to Jagdish Tytler, one of the Congress leaders accused of inciting genocidal violence against Sikhs in November 1984.
Move to form SIT is being viewed as a sincere effort of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) to serve the interests of justice, which has been blatantly denied to the victims of one of the most brutal incidents of genocidal violence in India after the partition of 1947.
The effectiveness of any SIT, as proposed by the Arvind Kejriwal’s government in Delhi, at this late stage remains to be seen and the past experiences don’t hold out much hope.
