Attempted murder of Sikh was a racially motivated “terror attack”: Sikh Federation UK

January 20, 2015 | By

London: A press release (dated: January 19, 2015) by the Sikh Federation UK says [t]he racially motivated attack last week with a machete and hammer by Zack Davies who was shouting ‘white power’ on a 24-year old Sikh who was simply out shopping in Tesco must be treated as a terror attack.

The incident has been downplayed despite containing all the ingredients of a terrorist attack. The attack in North Wales has left the 24-year old Sikh in hospital with deep cuts to the left hand, his back and the back of his head and Davies has now been charged with attempted murder.

Ironically the UK’s former Chief Rabbi, Lord Jonathan Sacks said that British Jews are scared to go to the shops in the wake of the Paris killings.

Bhai Amrik Singh, the Chair of the Sikh Federation (UK) said: ‘Politicians and the police are rightly concerned with anti-Semitism and stepped up their presence outside sensitive Jewish sites, but silent on the need to ensure the safety of Sikhs, one of the most visible ethnic minorities.’

‘The 700,000 Sikhs in Britain are widely recognised as a role model community. British Sikhs represent an exceptional example of successful integration whilst maintaining a very visible and distinctive religious identity.’
‘Since 9/11 Sikhs have often been the first to be targeted following Islamist terror attacks in the West. How many Sikhs need to be murdered or seriously attacked for the authorities to provide an adequate response?’

‘The attack last week and numerous examples of other attacks on Sikhs in the UK and across the globe through what has become popularly know as ‘mistaken identity’ since 9/11 is where the Sikh community continues to be failed by the authorities.’

‘These incidents provide another reminder that resources need to be allocated towards the security of the Sikh community and our religious institutions that have been attacked throughout the West – UK, USA, Canada, Greece and Australia by those who are ignorant.’

Sikhs have made an immense contribution in all spheres of public life in Britain. Sikhs have achieved this through honest hard work. They continue to promote equality and tolerance towards others through interfaith dialogue and charitable work.

Sikhs have a proud military tradition and have made a huge contribution. They have answered the call in both world wars with an unprecedented number sacrificing their lives for the freedoms we enjoy today in Europe. 83,005 turban wearing Sikh soldiers were killed and 109,045 were wounded in WW1 and WW2.
