Badal’s invitation to Amitabh Bachchan sparks wave of criticism

Anandpur Sahib (November 19, 2011): Badal regime in Punjab has taken another controversial step, which is bound to hurt the feelings of Sikhs in general and victims of November 1984 genocidal violence in particular.

The SAD (Badal)-BJP led state government of Punjab is inviting Amitabh Bachchan for the inauguration of prestigious religious project, the Khalsa heritage. This has invited objections from Sikh organizations because of Amitabh Bachchan’s alleged role in 1984 genocidal violence against Sikhs. More than three thousand Sikhs were killed in Delhi alone, during this violence.

The move may now cause a row as human rights and advocacy groups are set to lodge their protest against inviting Amitabh Bachchan.

Sikhs For Justice (SFJ) has already filed a complaint in Australia, accusing Bachchan of instigating violence against Sikhs by his slogans, following prime minister Indira Gandhi’s assassination.

The All India Sikh Students Federation (AISSF) led by Karnail Singh Peer Mohammad has written letters to all the jathedars of the five temporal seats of the Sikhs, including the Akal Takht, asking the clergy to “stop Punjab CM from committing this folly”.

The letter points out that the CM had already “hurt Sikh sentiments by organizing grand celebrations on the anniversary of anti-Sikh riots of 1984, on November 1, where Bollywood star Shah Rukh Khan had danced with semi-clad women. Stop the CM from repeating another mistake by calling someone who had instigated crowds to take revenge for the PM’s death.”

It is worth mentioning here that on October 18, Sikhs for Justice launched a criminal complaint against Bachchan with Australia’s Commonwealth Director of Public Prosecutions, accusing the star of “inciting, participating, conspiring, aiding, abetting and carrying out organized attacks on Sikh population.” The complaint was referred to the Australian federal police.

SFJ attorney Gurpatwant Pannu said, “It would be a black day in the history of Sikhs if Amitabh Bachchan inaugurates the Khalsa project.”

Badal Dal or Shiromani Akali Dal (Badal) has totally collaborated with the Indian State against Sikhs and it harboring and accommodating persons who are accused of crimes against Sikh people. Badal Dal has nominated Izhar Alam as it’s proposed candidate for upcoming assembly elections, whereas he is considered as mass killer of innocent Sikhs.[/hidepost]
