Balakot: IAF Chief Refuses to Give Number of People Killed; Says IAF Does not count Human Casualties

New Delhi: Amid ongoing speculations in Indian media over the number of people killed in the Balakot air strikes by the Indian Air Force, Indian Air Chief Marshal B.S. Dhanoa on Monday said the IAF does not count human casualties and said that statement (on casualties at Balakot) will be made by the government.

“(The) Air Force is not in a position to clarify how many people were inside We don’t count human casualties, we count what targets have we hit or not hit,” Air Chief Marshal Dhanoa told reporters.

A report in The Hindu notes that B.S. Dhanoa said the IAF cannot count how many people were killed in the operation. “That depends on how many people were there (at bombed place), he said

Air Chief Marshal Dhanoa said the bomb damage assessment post the mission calculates the number of targets their fighter pilots were able to hit or not.

It is notable that the Indian government had taken a plea that it had received intelligence reports that there were Jaish-e-Mohammad operatives at Balakot who were trained to carry out more attacks in India. Indian government says that IAF bombings in Balakot were aimed at killing out those J-e-M operatives. The Indian media is making huge claims in terms of human casualties saying that the Balakot strike had inflicted a major blow on J-e-M but the figures being propagated by sections of India media have come under general suspicion. Even IAF chief today refused to pass any specific comment on this issue. It may also be noted here that Pakistan denies Indian government and Indian media’s claims.
