Patiala (27 August, 2010): The Sikh Students Federation has reacted sharply against Bar Association of India’s decision to not to allow Law graduates to opt Punjabi as their medium for Lawyers eligibility test to be held on December 05.
SSF President Parmjeet Singh Gazi informed that “Bar Association of India has asked Law graduates to undergo an eligibility test in order to get enrolled as an advocate with respective Bar Councils of their states. Officially, nine languages, including Hindi, Tamil, Telgu, Kannar, Marathi, Bengali, Gurjrati, Oriya and English, have been recognized for the test. Punjabi is not included in the list.”
In Punjab various institutions, including Punjabi University Patiala, are providing legal education in Punjabi medium. Moreover Punjabi is official language of the State and work of lower courts is also conducted in Punjabi. “When Bar association has recognized the allotment of Law degrees in Punjabi language, there is not reason to exclude the language from being a medium for the eligibility test” said PS Gazi.
SSF claims that this decision would adversely affect all those candidates who opt to study law in their mother-language and at the same time it would harm the development of the regional language also. SSF has decided to take up the issue at appropriate level and soon representatives of the organization would approach education minister of the State to seek her intervention.
Meanwhile, today a delegation of Students of Punjabi University, Patiala led by SSF activists met University Vice-Chancellor, Dr. Jaspal Singh and Dean Students Welfare, Dr. Kulbir Singh Dhillon, and sough their intervention on this issue. Harjeet Singh, Lakhwinder Singh, Jagrup Singh and Akashdeep Singh who led the delegation informed media that University authorities have promised to do the needful, as the issue is related to future of students of the institution, as well as to the future of Punjabi language.
