Beating incident: 15 members of Satkar Committee booked for attempt to murder by police

Jalandhar: The Punjab police has reportedly booked 15 members of the Sri Guru Granth Sahib Satkar Committee who allegedly beat up three persons, supposed to be professional granthis at Pamman village in Kapurthala district. These persons were reportedly were coming from Shahkot after facilitating an Akhand Paath Sahib in violation of clear directions of Akal Takhat Sahib on March 29.

Later, the video of beating was uploaded on social sites and it went viral over Facebook and WhatsApp.

Mahinder Singh, a resident of Fattu Dhinga village, along with Gurwel Singh and Gurnam Singh, had lodged a complaint with the police on April 23, alleging that members of the Satkar Committee beat them up on the pretext of their performing Akhand Paath at a wrong place.

Those booked by the police include Sukhjit Singh, a resident of Lohian; Tarlochan Singh, Gurbhej Singh, Karamjit Singh and 11 unidentified people.

“When we reached near Mungpur village, a group of people surrounded us and dragged granthi Gurnam Singh from the car and beat him up,” Mahinder Singh said in his complaint.

He said that following that they took Gurnam Singh with them in their car.

“We started following them and they stopped their car at a petrol pump near Pamman village and asked us to come out of the car,” Mahinder alleged.

He said that after that they forcibly detained them and took them to an isolated room. “They thrashed us badly and asked us to apologise for performing the akhand path at the wrong place,” he said.

They also uploaded the video on social websites, including Facebook, YouTube and Whatsapp to tarnish our reputation.

Sultanpur Lodhi deputy superintendent of police (DSP) Davinder Singh said they had arrested Karamjit Singh, while others would be arrested soon.

“During interrogation Karamjit Singh said that despite warning, the granthis performed path at a wrong place, so they had punished them,” the DSP added.

Meanwhile, a case has been registered under Sections 323, 307, 342, 365, 295, 382, 506, 148 and 149 of the Indian Penal Code at Talwandi Chaudhrian police station.
