Chandigarh/ Ludhaina (January 26, 2014): As per information available with the Sikh Siyasat News (SSN) Bhai Lakhwinder Singh and Bhai Shamsher Singh returned to the Chandigarh Model Jail, Burail this evening after completing 28 days parole. Duo were released on parole on December 27, 2013 after 44 days long hunger strike protest by Bhai Gurbaksh Singh Khalsa.
It may be recalled that Bhai Lakhwinder Singh and Shamsher Singh, along with Bhai Gurmeet Singh were imprisoned at Burail jail since 1995. They were convicted in Punjab CM Beant Singh assassination case in 2007 and were sentenced to undergo imprisonment for life.
Trio have spent 18 years behind the bars, while the as per applicable jail rules the case of a life terms convict needs to be reviewed for permanent release after completing 14 years in prison.
It is notable that Bhai Gurmeet Singh who was released from jail on December 25, 2013 on 28 days parole has already returned to jail on Jan. 23.
As per information their applications for grant of extension in parole and permanent release were still pending before the authorities.
Before going back to the jail Bhai Lakhwinder Singh was accompanied by his father Darshan Singh besides Advocate Amar Singh Chahal, Advocate Gurjinder Singh Sahni, Bhai RP Singh and others. His sisters Sukhwinder Kaur and Paramjit Kaur and their husbands had also come from Ludhiana to see him off.
Similarly, Bhai Shamsher Singh was also accompanied by his wife Baljinder Kaur, son Onkar Singh, brother Bhagwant Singh and sister Charanjit Kaur besides Bhai RP Singh, Bhai Satnam Singh Paunta Sahib and others.
Lakhwinder said he had stayed at his sister’s home in Ludhiana for most of the period. “I only went to the Darbar Sahib and my village Narangwal when I was out on parole,” he said.
Shamsher Singh said he visited the Darbar Sahib and mostly remained at his residence in Usski Jattan near Rajpura.
“I spent days with my family after a gap of about 19 years,” said Shamsher Singh.
“Now, we want that the SAD government and those who had promised to secure our release should keep their word,” said Lakhwinder Singh, before going back to jail.
