New Delhi: The campaigning for Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee (DSGMC) elections 2017 will end on Friday (February 24) at 5 pm. Polling for all 46 constituencies will be held on February 26 (Sunday). Notably, DSGMC house is elected for a term of 4 years. During last elections held in 2013 the Shriomani Akali Dal (Badal) had defeated Shiromani Akali Dal (Delhi) led by former DSGMC chief Paramjit Singh Sarna.
There are 3 lakh, 80 thousand and 91 registered Sikh voters for the DSGMC elections. SAD (Badal) and SAD (Delhi) are contesting elections on all 46 seats. Panthic Sewa Dal has fielded 39 candidates. Aam Akali Dal has fielded 9 candidates and Akal Sahai Welfare Society that has patronage of former jathedar Bhai Ranjit Singh has fielded 11 candidates. There are 184 independent candidates in the contest. Total number for candidates for 46 seats is 335. Notably, Sikh Sadbhawna Dal led by Bhai Baldev Singh Wadala was not allotted any election symbol by Gurdwara Elections board therefore all candidates of Sikh Sadbhawna Dal are contesting as independent candidates. Interesting, all independent candidates belonging to Sikh Sadbhawana Dal are contesting elections on single election symbol.
As per reports, SAD (Badal) is being targeted by other contesting parties for beadbi incidents in Punjab and also for seeking support of a Sirsa based Dera in Punjab state assembly elections- polling for which was held on February 04. Besides targeting SAD (Badal) on these issues, Panthic Sewa Dal has targeted SAD (Badal) and SAD (Delhi) for alleged financials embezzlements corruption in DSGMC run institutes.
Punjab based United Akali Dal (UAD) is canvassing for SAD (Delhi) candidates in these elections where as Shiromani Akali Dal Amritsar (Mann) has distant itself from these elections.
