Chandigarh: The transfer of power from the colonial British rulers to the newly formed states of India and Pakistan inflicted grave cost on Punjab as it resulted in one of the largest known displacement of population caused by partition of Punjab.
The Sikhs of Punjab suffered the most due to 1947 partition which India and Pakistan consider as their independence or freedom, as it did not only resulted in loss of numerous lives and displacement of the survivors but also resulted in further political subjugation of Sikhs under Indian state.
A Canada based poet/writer cum documentary maker Sukhdeep Singh Barnala has announced to release a documentary titled “ਅਜ਼ਾਦੀ ਦੇ ਓਹਲੇ” (“The Other Side of Freedom“) this August.
This documentary has five episodes and first episode will be released on Rising Punjab’s YouTube channel on August 5, said Sukhdeep Singh who originally hails from Barnala in Punjab.
He further said that the other episodes of his documentary will be released on August 6, 9, 12 and 13.
Sukhdeep Singh said that his documentary discusses the pre-partition period also. “This documentary throws light on the events starting with “Chabbian Da Morcha” of 1922 to the adoption of the Indian constitution in 1951- to which the Sikh representatives had declined to endorse”.
The documentary also carries testimonies of survivors of 1947 partition, he added.
