Canadian Representatives Express Solidarity With Sikhs

June 9, 2012 | By

Vancouver, BC (June 7, 2012) – As the Sikh Nation commemorates the week-long siege of the Darbar Sahib complex in 1984 by the Indian Army this week, several Canadian elected representatives expressed their solidarity with the Sikh community.

In a strong statement read out in the Ontario Legislative Assembly, MPP from Bramalea-Gore-Malton, Jagmeet Singh condemned the military invasion of Darbar Sahib and the simultaneous systematic attack of over 50 Gurdwaras in the state of Punjab resulting in the deaths of thousands of men, women, and children. Jagmeet Singh expressed his sympathies and demanded justice for the families of victims of the horrific attack, emphasizing that such an atrocity should not happen anywhere in the world.

Similarly, the Leader of the Official Opposition, Tom Mulcair, published a statement expressing his solidarity “with the community, independent human rights organizations and Canadians across the country, in seeking justice.”

Canadian Sikh Coalition spokesperson, Moninder S. Bual applauded both Opposition Leader, Tom Mulcair and MPP Jagmeet Singh for their strong messages of solidarity and remembrance.

“The community greatly appreciates the statements of solidarity from Canada’s elected representatives as they truly represent the sentiments of their constituents fearlessly. We would encourage other representatives to do the same and take the solidarity one step further, out of their respective assemblies and into their communities. We are confident that both Tom Mulcair and Jagmeet Singh will continue championing the social justice causes not only of the Sikh community but of all Canadians.”
