Sambu Barrier: The Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) leader Abhay Chautala along with his party workers here today while coming from new vegetable market, Ambala and going towards Kapuri village in Punjab addressed the rally of his party workers.
INLD workers were able to crossed barricades placed at Ghaghhar crossing but they were prevented from entering the Punjab at the Shambu barrier by the Punjab police.
After being stopped by the Punjab Police Abhay Chautala while addressed his party workers. He said that the river waters were allocated to Haryana during division of the Punjab and the decision of Supreme Court of India to construct the Satluj Yamuna Link (SYL) canal.
Notably, the INLD leader had announced to start digging the controversial canal after forcefully entering into the Punjab.
INLD workers and leaders were also briefly detained by the police after they made their way back to Haryana.
Meanwhile, Bains Brothers led Lok Insaaf Party (LIP) of Punjab workers were stopped at Pataila. They were marching towards Kapuri village in Patiala district under the banner of “Lalkar Rally” to challenge INLD workers. Simranjit Bains while interacting with media said that “both INLD and SAD (Badal) are hand in gloves and both share a good family relationships.” He further said that it is due to Parkash Singh Badal that the state is going through such a tussle.
Furthermore, it is ironical to note that on the one hand the political class of Haryana was marching towards Punjab for its water on the other the India judiciary in guise of Supreme Court of India reiterated its stand against Punjab to allocate state’s natural resource (river water) to non-riparian states. On Wednesday (22 Feb) a bench of SCI reiterated its earlier stand and outrightly declined to consider basic facts/factors that Haryana had no legitimate claim over Punjab’s river water and there was no extra water with Punjab to spare for Haryana.
The bench headed by Justice PC Ghose stated: “We are at a stage where the decree has to be executed.”
“The Bench said the canal had to be constructed first. Whether the water was there or not or it’ll be there only in the rainy season or how much quantity was being maintained could be sorted out later”, notes a report in The Tribune (TT).
