Chandigarh: The Punjab Government yesterday submitted in the Punjab and Haryana High Court that Kulpreet alias Neeta Deol was not yet re-arrested by the Punjab Police. Neeta Deol had reportedly escaped from Nabha jail on November 27 with five other inmates.
Notably, certain media reports had quoted unnamed Punjab police officials saying that Neeta Deol was arrested on the late evening of November 27.
Similarly, a Facebook post of official page of Punjab CM Parkash Singh Badal had also declared the capture of Neeta Deol besides Harminder Singh Mintoo.
Based on aforesaid media reports and Facebook post of CM Badal, Neeta Deol’s father Surjit Singh had moved to the Punjab and Haryana High Court with habeas corpus seeking production of his son.
Punjab inspector general of police (crime) G Nageshwar Rao filed an affidavit informing the High Court that Neeta Deol has not been arrested so far. He added that a special investigation team (SIT) of six police officers has been constituted to probe the jail break case.
As per media reports [t]he high court bench of justice MMS Bedi questioned the government counsel as to when SIT members were not in city and the case diary was also not available at Chandigarh, how the IGP concluded that he Neeta had not been arrested. The court later asked the IGP to file a fresh affidavit on December 3 giving details of the official record on the basis of which he had furnished the affidavit in the court.
