New Delhi, India (March 21, 2014): As per information the Congress party today released a list of 26 candidates for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.
Former Punjab Chief Minister and former Punjab Pardesh Congress Committee (PPCC) head Captain Amarinder Singh has been declared as candidate from Amritsar Lok Sabha seat. He would take on senior BJP leader Arun Jaitley, who has replaced three times BJP MP Navjot Sidhu from this seat.
Congress has announced the name of another senior Congress leader Ambika Soni as party candidate from Anandpur Sahib Lok Sabha seat. With the announcement of Soni, the Congress has withdrawn Ravneet Singh Bittu, the sitting MP from Anandpur Sahib from the electoral race. He was earlier announced as candidate from Anandpur Sahib and had been campaigning vigorously till today.
Amarinder Singh was showing reluctantance to fight Lok Sabha polls and had made it clear by giving two reasons. He said that he was interested in state politics and that he would not be able to spare time for Amritsar as his wife and Union Minister Preneet Kaur was also contesting Lok Sabha elections from Patiala.
It is understood that Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi prevailed upon Captain Amarinder Singh that he should fight from Amritsar, in the interest of party.
