Dal Khalsa Leader Writes to Canadian PM Justin Trudeau Ahead of His Punjab Visit

February 17, 2018 | By

Amritsar: Dal Khalsa unequivocally welcomes Canadian Premier Justin Trudeau in Punjab and at ‘Darbar Sahib’, Amritsar. Expressing its gratitude for the respectful status of the Sikh people in Canada, party spokesperson Kanwar Pal Singh said Canada leads as an example of multiculturalism in the world.

In a letter to Canadian prime minister few days prior to his visit, he said ‘your visit to Punjab and India has evinced great interest’. Notably, Trudeau and his colleagues are scheduled to pay obeisance at Darbar Sahib on Feb 21.

“Unlike visits of other leading dignitaries, the Indian media, on cue from the Indian establishment, is in the overdrive to embarrass Trudeau on the basis of imagined fears, lies, subterfuge and in some cases, yellow journalism too especially by TV channels”, writes Kanwar Pal Singh.

In his letter emailed to Prime Minister Office in Ottawa and Canadian High Commission at Delhi, he said the Delhi based magazine in its recent edition has dragged Trudeau’s name in the on-going Sikh freedom struggle.

Challenging the theory and twisted logic of the news magazine, the letter explained the historicity of the demand for right to self-rule through self-determination of the people of Punjab.

Slamming media for wrongfully portraying the Sikh liberation struggle as part of lager conspiracy hatched by western countries, he said this was nothing new. “It has been going on since the seventies of the last century. India has earlier blamed America, British, Germany, France and Pakistan for perpetuating the struggle in the Punjab”, reads the letter.

This time around, the language is similar; only the focus of India and the media has changed. The new target is Canada, reads the letter. Contesting the Indian allegations, he said the Sikh Diaspora has been making the right move on Canadian soil, raising human rights concern and endorsing the call for the right to self-determination.

The problem with India is that it refuses to understand that if Canada allows the right to self-determination to people of the Quebec, it cannot advocate the denial of the same to anyone else for that matter.
