New Delhi: The Delhi police today detained seven more students from the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU). The detentions follow yesterday’s arrest of Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) student’s union president Kanhaiya Kumar’s arrested in connection with a case of sedition.

Kanhaiya Kumar is a member of the left-wing CPI’s students body AISF and was elected as president of JNU Students Union in last elections. He was arrested a day after BJP MP from East Delhi, Maheish Girri, registered a complaint.

The students who were detained today were reportedly trying to protest at Indira Gandhi Kala Kendra. They have been taken to the Parliament Street police station for questioning in connection with the case.

Notably the police had cracked down on a group of protestors at the JNU on Friday and arrested the student leader on sedition charges for raising alleged ‘anti-India slogans’ during a demonstration in the campus to in protest to revocation of permissions to hold an event to mark the hanging of Kashmiri national Afzal Guru on Tuesday.

Kanhaiya Kumar’s arrest evoked strong reactions from JNU students and teachers and Opposition parties. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi also visited JNU campus and condemned the BJP led central government for lodging alleged crackdown on JNU students. Rahul was shown black flags by activists of RSS and BJP’s students wing ABVP. ABVP has also ‘thanked’ police for arresting the “anti-nationals”.
