Ahmedabad, Gujrat (June 11, 2014): According to certain media reports [t]he Ahmedabad city crime branch on Tuesday (June 10) gave a clean chit to newly appointed finance minister of India – Arun Jaitley and Punjab revenue minister Bikram Singh Majithia in a matter related to distortion of a Shabad of tenth Sikh Guru, Guru Gobind Singh Ji. Submitting a report before the Gujarat high court the police concluded that Bikram Majithia’s conduct was ‘unintentional’.
It is notable that while seeking votes for Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP) candidate from Amritsar Arun Jaitley during the 2014 general election, Bikram Majithia had distorted a shabad of Guru Gobind Singh Ji. He had also likened the senior BJP leader to Guru Gobind Singh during a Kamboj community meeting at Shaheed Udham Singh Hall in Amritsar.
Bikram Majithia’s comment had enraged the Sikh community and he had to tender a written apology to the Akal Takht. He was also ordered by the Akal Takht Jathedar to do Sewa at five Takhts of the Sikh religion and render community service.
According to Times of India (TOI), three Amdavadis – Manmeetsingh Chabra, Gurudevsingh Saliya and Satnamsingh Chabra – had submitted a written complaint to police commissioner Shivanand Jha last month. “The complaint was forwarded to the city crime branch for further inquiry,” an official said.
“The matter was heard on Tuesday (June 10). We have filed a written reply in the high court giving a clean chit to Majithia and Jaitley,” officials said.
A senior official of the city police said after going through the campaign video, they found that the comment was “unintentional” and thus an offence is not constituted. “The next hearing is on June 17,” the official added.
