I Do Not Have Much Hope From Indian Supreme Court: Arundhati Roy on CAA and NRC

December 26, 2019 | By

New Delhi: Internationally acclaimed author Arundhati Roy has said that she does not have much hope from Indian Supreme Court regarding controversial “Citizenship Amendment Act” (CAA) and National Register of Citizens (NRC). She was talking to Aljazeera on the sidelines of an event held about CAA and NRC in New Delhi on Wednesday (Dec. 25).

Responding to a question “Do you think that the Supreme Court will stop them (Modi Government) when it hears dozens of petitions against the Citizenship Amendment Act next month?”, Arundhati Roy said “Look, I don’t know. I don’t have much hope there (from the Supreme Court)’.

Citing Assam, Arundhati Roy said that the Government has already prepared NRC in Assam while the Supreme Court is still to decide that whether preparing such a document was constitutionally valid or not?

She said that all the damage has already been done in Assam while the Supreme Court was still hearing the matter.

She said that people in the rest of India do not know much about the horror that was unleashed on people in Assam because of NRC drive.

“The Supreme Court has not stood in the way of the government in any of its agendas so far. So, I hope it will, but I don’t have that much hope”, she concluded.
