Do the Vedas Contain Non-Sanskrit Punjabi Words? Tracing the Origins of Punjabi Language

As part of a series of exclusive interviews with researchers, scholars, and linguistic experts on the origin of the Punjabi language and the Gurmukhi script, journalist Mandeep Singh conducted the third interview with Sirdar Nazar Singh. The first interview in the series featured Dr. Sikandar Singh from the Department of Punjabi at Sri Guru Granth Sahib World University, Fatehgarh Sahib. The second interview was also with Sirdar Nazar Singh.

Sirdar Nazar Singh has dedicated many years to researching languages and critically analyzing the claims made by various scholars regarding the origin of the Punjabi language. He challenges the views of Indian nationalist scholars who assert that Punjabi evolved from Sanskrit. Based on his extensive research, Sirdar Nazar Singh argues that Punjabi is an indigenous language of the region now known as Punjab—the land of five rivers—and that it developed organically over time. He firmly rejects the notion that Sanskrit is the mother of the Punjabi language.
