Eyeing on Dera votes, Narendra Modi showers praise for Dera Sauda Sirsa Chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim

Sirsa, Haryana: With a view to woo voters belonging to the Sirsa-based sect Dera Sacha Sauda, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi showered praise for controversial Dera chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh. While addressing a BJP rally on Saturday (Oct. 11) Narendra Modi said: “Mein guru maharaj Ram Singhji Mastanji ke Sacha Sauda ko pranam karta hun (I salute Ram Singhji, Mastanji’s Sacha Sauda)”.

Narendra Modi, who was appointed the in-charge of BJP’s Haryana affairs in 1995, also reminded that he had got the chance to salute the Dera chief earlier as well.

Interestingly, this praise and respect comes six days after Dera chief rained sudden praise on Narendra Modi during a blood donation camp. Gurmeet Singh is facing alleged charges of raping two ‘sadhvis’ (dera inmates) and CBI has already filed a chargesheet against him in the special CBI court.

Gurmeet Ram Rahim lauded Narendra Modi’s recently-launched Swachh Bharat Mission during an interaction with the media. He had said that there is a lot to say about Narendra Modi. What he has done is remarkable and I am just a fakir and he has my blessings.

A news reported by Times of India (TOI) quotes sources in Dera says: “A day before Modi’s rally, the Haryana political wing of the sect had asked its followers to attend the event. It indicates that this time around dera may support the BJP”.

But Dera spokesperson Pawan Insan refuted the claims. He said: “There was no message from any political wing to ask the followers to attend PM’s rally”.

‘Controversial Dera chief’

Dera chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh was chargesheeted by the CBI in August 2007 for allegedly raping two sadhvis. The issue came to light in 2002 when an anonymous letter by one of his followers alleging sexual exploitation by the dera head was sent to the then Prime Minister.

One such letter was also sent to Punjab and Haryana high court following which it had directed a CBI probe and a case under sections 376 and 506 (rape and criminal intimidation) of the IPC was registered against Gurmeet Singh.

He is also facing trials in cases for his alleged involvement in the murders of dera manager Ranjit Singh and Sirsa-based journalist Ram Chander Chatterpatti. He is out on bail and facing trial in Panchkula-based special CBI court.
