Free Akal Takht team launches Global Sikh Governance Framework

New York, USA: The Free Akal Takht team has launched “Global Sikh Governance Framework”. According to a press release issued by Harbaljit Singh on behalf of Free Akal Takht team, [o]ver the last 6 months, the Free Akal Takht movement has been gathering views from Sikhs worldwide on the ideal process for governing and decision-making within the global Sikh community.
“The movement’s Drafting Committee – comprising prominent lawyers, thinkers and academics – has now published the second draft of the global governance guidelines, which are available in English and Punjabi. This draft incorporates all the comments and views that have been shared by Sikhs worldwide over the past 6 months. The report is available online at www.freeakaltakht.org”, reads the release.

“The Free Akal Takht team embarked on an international tour that has covered over 40 cities across the United Kingdom, United States of America, Canada and Australia – the four major hubs of diasporic Sikhs – to engage major Sikh organisations, influencers and the wider Sikh population (sangat). Opinions have been sought from those in the Sikh heartland of Punjab as well. An active social media campaign and global media outreach strategy invited all those with an opinion to share their views on a draft framework, which was first released online in February 2016”, it reads further.
As per the release, S. Harinder Singh, lead coordinator of Free Akal Takht and prominent Sikh Scholar, says, “This is about a community taking back control of its own destiny. The 30-million strong global Sikh population is in existential crisis, and for too long has suffered from inadequate and underdeveloped leadership at a global and regional level. #FreeAkalTakht was established to facilitate discourse on how we as a community create a decision-making process and governance model that is inclusive and transparent, and build 21st century institutions for deliberation, governance and action. Our history has shown that we have always been stronger united than divided. And this is our window of opportunity. I invite any Sikh with an interest to share their views.”
“The movement is now hosting an in-person and social media mobilisation effort. The aim is to prepare a final draft of the Sikh Governance Framework by September 1st, in time to spread awareness and gather acceptance in time for the next planned Sarbat Khalsa, scheduled to take place in November 2016 to ensure the Panth’s voice is heard. Free Akal Takht will be sharing a ‘Question of the Week’ on various aspects of the governance framework, and other information on resources and planned events happening worldwide.
