Amritsar, Punjab (November 23, 2011): Reaffirming that Guru Teg Bahadur is ‘dharam di chadar (cover for religion) and not ‘hind-di-chadar’ (cover for Hindus), the Dal Khalsa said ‘ninth guru sacrificed his life to uphold human rights and religious freedom of the oppressed class irrespective of their religion and caste.
In a statement on the eve of Gurpurab, spokesperson Kanwar Pal Singh pointed out that the sacrifice of the Guru was unparalleled in the annals of the recent history. He said the guru tasted martyrdom to fight against tyranny and to protect the oppressed class irrespective of their religion.
He asked the Union government to correct all errors and misgivings about Sikh Gurus from the textbooks published by the NCERT. Realizing that the Sikh history has been either written by non-Sikhs or under the influence of ruling elite, he urged the Sikh historians and scholars to rewrite their history free from outside influence.
The organization has urged the Sikh Diaspora to observe the martyrdom day of ninth Guru as ‘Human Rights and Religious Freedom’ day on Nov 24.
