India calls off Indio-Pak talks in wake of Pakistan’s invitation to pro-freedom Kashmiri leaders

New Delhi, India (August 18, 2014): Pakistan government’s decision to invite pro-freedom Kashmiri leaders for a meeting ahead of 25 August Foreign Secretary level meeting between India and Pakistan has triggered major controversy in India. Opposition Congress party was taking dig at the Narendra Modi government for continuing talks despite Pakistan’s invitation to Kashmir leaders.

As per media reports shortly after Hurriyat Conference Jammu Kashmir (HCJK) leader, Shabir Ahmad Shah met Pakistan envoy, Abdul Basit in New Delhi, India announced the cancellation of talks at Foreign Secretary Level with Pakistan.

The Indian Foreign Secretary conveyed to Pakistan High Commissioner in New Delhi that her talks with Pakistan counterpart on August 25 in Islamabad stands cancelled.

The Indian Foreign Secretary Sujatha Singh, who was supposed to meet her Pakistani counterpart Aizaz Ahmad Chaudhury on August 25, had warned the envoy that “he can either have dialogue with India or separatists,” reports said.

The Indian government reportedly had told Pakistan envoy that either talk to pro-freedom Kashmiri leaders or them.
