Srinagar: Amid growing pro-freedom protests in the Kashmir Valley, the Election Commission of India on Tuesday rescinded its notification issued for the Anantnag by-poll, which was scheduled for May 25, till further notice.
“In view of the prevailing ground situation and non-availability of sufficient security forces, the Commission is of the considered view that a peaceful, free and fair poll is not feasible on May 25, as scheduled at present, though some political parties have asked for the same,” the EC said in a statement.
Later on Tuesday, Jammu and Kashmir Governor Narinder Nath Vohra will meet Indian Home Minister Rajnath Singh to discuss the situation in the Valley.
Notably the Srinagar by-poll conducted by the Indian administration few weeks ago had witnessed very poor turnout in wake of boycott of polls by pro-freedom Kashmiri groups.
