Jalandhar, Punjab (October 22, 2012): According to information the Jalandhar Police today produced Bhai Daljit Singh, former President of Akali Dal Panch Pardhani, in the court of Judicial Magistrate (Jalnadhar) Daisy Bangar on demanded his police remand for 3 days. He is reportedly booked in F.I.R. 216/2012, initially registered against a British national Jaswant Singh Azad under sections 121, 121A, 120B (IPC); section 25 (Arms Act); Sections 10, 13, 17, 18B, 20, 38, 39 and 40 Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA).
Media reports had suggested that the Police had been accusing Jaswant Singh for allegedly financing anti-India militant activities and creation of “sleeper cells” for Khalistan, however Jaswant Singh’s wife had strongly condemned the police action in a communication reportedly sent to various media section in Punjab from UK.
According to Advocate Jaspal Singh Manjhpur (Bhai Daljit Singh Bittu’s counsel) Bhai Daljit Singh was lodged in Nabha Jail and the police had produced him in the court on production warrants and Sarabjeet Singh, DSP of Jalandhar Police Station Division number 8 demanded police remand of Bhai Daljit Singh. Police alleged that Jaswant Singh Azad had given his Maharaj Nagar Ludhiana based house/building to Bhai Daljit Singh for allegedly conducting “terrorist” activities.
“They (the police) were levelling similar accusations that were levelled against Bhai Daljit Singh in 2009 when he was falsely implicated under UAPA. These accusations had already been investigated and the case is under trial at Ludhaina for past three years. Therefore there was no logic in grant the police custody of Bhai Daljit Singh, and we raised strong objections in the court” Advocate Jaspal Singh Manjhpur told Sikh Siyasat News over phone.
“The concerned building is owned by Jaswant Singh and is on rent with Akali Dal Panch Pardhani, which was being for the office of the party. On September 21, 2012 the police conducted a raid on party office and seized party records, including computers, books and newspaper cuttings. The office building was locked by the Ludhiana police and is in police’s possession” Manjhpur added.
As the matter had already been investigated by the Punjab police there was no reason for demanded custody on for alleged reasons, he added.
But the court has sent Bhai Daljit Singh on police remand till 25 October, 2012.
It is notable that Bhai Daljit Singh had alleged physical and mental torture during his police custody with Ludhiana police about a month ago.
Bhai Harpal Singh Cheema, acting president of ADPP has condemned the police action. He claimed that ADPP leaders were being implicated in false cases due to political reasons.
“The whole process is aimed at stifling the political dissent and is being directed from the top” he added.
