New Delhi: As it was expected the Special Investigation Team (SIT) formed by union home ministry has concluded with its judicial stunt by again closing probe into 51 of the 60 cases it had re-opened in connection with the 1984 Sikh genocide.
In its documented reply submitted with the Rajya Sabha here on Wednesday the government reportedly said that five of the remaining cases are still under investigation and the SIT has filed charge-sheets in four and five other cases are still being probed.
It was back in February 2015 that the union home ministry had constituted SIT to enact the drama of supposed probe or re-investigation into the cases of Sikh killings. It is stated by the government that around 3000 Sikhs were massacred in Delhi alone on the pretext of Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi’s assassination on 31st October 1984.
Moreover, it is said that around 650 cases were registered in connection with the killings but the Delhi police deliberately closed around 240 cases, claiming no evidence. The SIT was asked to give an impression of re-look into all these cases for further probe.
Minister of state for home Hanraj Ahir informed the Upper House on Wednesday claiming that the SIT has scrutinised records of 293 cases and examined more than 1,000 witnesses in different states, media sources said.
“After scrutiny of the records, a total number of 60 cases were reopened for further investigation. Of these 60 cases, charge sheet has been filed in four cases, 51 have been closed and further investigation in five cases is under progress,” Hanraj Ahir further added to his claim.
The reply did not give details of number of accused chargesheeted in the four cases where the probe has been closed. Ahir clarified that there is no delay on the part of the SIT in completing the investigation. “As the records are very old, they are in very bad shape. Several records are in Urdu language, which had to be translated,” he further maintained, reports Hindustan Times (HT).
