Amritsar, Punjab (January 02, 2014): Sikh bodies Dal Khalsa and Akali Dal Panch Pardhani (ADPP) have appealed to the Sikh sangat to attend the Shaheedi ardas samagam to be held near Akal Takht Sahib (Darbar Sahib complex) in the memory of Shaheed Bhai Satwant Singh and Shaheed Bhai Kehar Singh.
The ardas samagam is scheduled to be held on January 06 to mark the 25th anniversary of martyrdom of Bhai Satwant Singh and Kehar Singh, who were sentenced to death by Indian courts in Indira Gandhi assassination case.
Notably, Bhai Beant Singh along with Bhai Satwant Singh had killed Indira Gandhi, the then Indian prime minister, on 31 October 1984 in the aftermath of brutal army attack at Darbar Sahib (Amritsar) and other Sikh Gurdwaras in June 1984.
Bhai Beant Singh was martyred by other bodyguards of Indira Gandhi. He was recognized as a national Sikh martyr by Akal Takht Sahib. Bhai Satwant Singh was also wounded on 31 Oct 1984 but he had survived the gun shot injuries. He was sentenced to death along with Bhai Kehar Singh.
After their martyrdom on 6 January 1989 Bhai Satwant Singh and Kehar Singh were also declared as national Sikh martyrs. Their martyrdom day is annually observed at Akal Takht Sahib.
Dal Khalsa leader Kanwar Pal Singh has issued an appeal to the Sikh masses to attend the ardas to be held at Akal Takht Sahib on January 06.
“To Commemorate the 25th martyrdom day of Bhai Satwant Singh and Bhai Kehar Singh, who were hanged on 6 Jan 1989, Kirtan and Ardas will be performed in their memory on Jan 6th (Monday) at Darbar Sahib, Amritsar” he informed through a Facebook post.
“To pay tributes to great ‘martyrs’, be part of the Sangat” he added.
