More than 2000 cops deployed at Gurdaspur in wake of Martyrdom day of Bhai Jaspal Singh

Gurdaspur, Punjab (March 29, 2013): It is learnt that the Punjab police have made extensive security arrangements in Gurdaspur, especially in and around village Chourh Sidhwan in wake of martyrdom day of Shaheed Bhai Jaspal Singh.

Bhai Jaspal Singh was killed on March 29, 2012 when the Punjab police had opened fire on a group Sikhs holding a peaceful demonstration at Gurdaspur. Bhai Jaspal Singh was a B. Tech (first year) student at Beant College of Engineering and Technology, Gurdaspur.
It is notable that the Sikh panth had observed a successful Punjab bandh against the proposed execution of a Sikh political prisoner – Bhai Balwant Singh Rajoana on March 28, 2012.
A complete bandh was observed in Gurdaspur that day, but Shiv Sena activists beat up some Sikh youths and removed their turbans during the bandh.
According to certain media reports sixteen persons, including Shiv Sena Gurdaspur unit head Harvinder Soni, were booked for the assault.
According to Hindustan Times (HT) “The next day Hindu organisations called a bandh in Gurdaspur demanding cancellation of the FIR. Some members of radical Sikh organisations assembled at Gurdwara Ramgarhia on the Tibri road in Gurdaspur to stop Shiv Sena activists from forcing traders to shut their shops”.
“The police, who had cordoned off the gurdwara by forming a human chain around it, suddenly opened fire on Sikh youths”, it reads further.
Curfew was clamped in Gurdaspur after the incident. The then deputy commissioner, Mohinder Singh Kainth, and SSP Varinderpal Singh were transferred and the government promised prompt action against the guilty policemen.
But Jaspal Singh’s family members rued that no action had been taken so far. “Instead of taking action, the authorities soon reinstated the three police officials who had been transferred” they said.
SSP Rajjit Singh reportedly told Hindustan Times (HT) on March 28, 2013 that he had also called police personnel from neighbouring districts to maintain peace during the function organised on the occasion of Jaspal Singh’s first death anniversary. Representatives of radical Sikh organisations are also expected to attend the function.
The SSP reportedly told that more than 2,000 cops had been deployed at police nakas in Gurdaspur and Chourh Sidhwan village, 7 km from here, since March 26 to prevent any untoward incident.
