Chandigarh/ Punjab (July 13, 2014): Chandigarh based lawyer and human rights activist Advocate Navkiran Singh has said that there was a dire need for evolving a strong legal mechanism to get human rights abuses addressed.

He was talking to the Sikh Siyasat News (SSN) regarding pending cases of human rights abuses committed by the state machinery in Punjab during early 1990s period.

Advocate Navkiran Singh said that only a handful of cases stood on trial and the number of cases where the trial resulted in conviction of guilty cops could be counted on fingers.

Whereas, he added, there were numerous cases of blatant human rights abuses where no proceedings had ever taken place.

Pointing to the case of Paramjeet Singh, in which 8 police personnel were sentenced to imprisonment for life earlier this year, Advocate Navkiran Singh said that there was success in cases where the victims’ families stood up firmly for justice and received free legal assistance.

In Paramjeet Singh’s case the efforts of victim’s father to get death certificate of his son ultimately turned into struggle for securing justice. Free legal assistance was provided to Gurdit Singh, victims’ father, by Advocate Navkiran Singh.

He said that many other cases were laying pending in the courts in which there was no progress because either the families have given up hope or the lawyers engaged under free legal aid mechanism were not willing to pursue the cases.

He stressed that a legal mechanism should be evolved to effectively pursue these cases.
