Norwich: Swaranjit Singh Khalsa, a 40-year-old native of Jalandhar (Punjab), has become the first Sikh to be elected Mayor of Norwich in Connecticut state of the United States of America (USA).
A candidate for the Democratic Party, Swaranjit Singh Khalsa was previously elected to the city council in 2021. In the recent mayoral polls, he emerged victorious in a three-way race against Republican Tracy Gould and independent candidate Marcia Wilbur.
As an Amritdhari (baptised) Sikh, Swaranjit Singh Khalsa now represents a city that is home to just 10 other Sikh families.
Notably, he has been active within the Norwich community, leading efforts to gain recognition for the 1984 Sikh genocide at both the city and state levels.
