Pakistan grants visas to 504 Sikhs for nagar kirtan to be taken out from Nankana Sahib

AMRITSAR: Carrying on its lenient attitude toward the Sikhs, Pakistan government on Friday gave the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) formal permission to take out nagar kirtan from Nankana Sahib on August 1 to celebrate 550th parkash gurpurb of Guru Nanak, founder of Sikh religion, by granting visas to as many as 504 Sikhs.

The SGPC sent names of 528 Sikhs including its president Gobind Singh Longowal, Akal Takht Sahib acting jathedar Giani Harpreet Singh and other heads of Sikh Takhts for the nagar kirtan which will culminate at historic town Sultanpur Lodhi after visiting various places. Only 24 names were rejected, said an official of the gurdwara management body.

Thanking government of Pakistan for giving formal permission to the nagar kirtan, Longowal said the nagar kirtan will play vital role in bringing people of both Punjabs together and normalise tension between India and Pakistan.

As per the schedule, the jatha of 504 Sikhs will leave for Nankana Sahib, birth place of Guru Nanak, in Pakistan’s Punjab on July 30 through Attari-Wagah international border. Prior to this, a delegation led by the SGPC chief secretary Roop Singh will go to Nankana Sahib on July 27 for making arrangements for the nagar kirtan.

Notably, the Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee (DSGMC) and Shiromani Akali Dal (Delhi) will also be taking two separate nagar kirtans from Delhi to Nankana Sahib in wake of the gurpurb.
