Universally accepted Sikh Calendar can not be altered without universal consensus – SSF

January 4, 2010 | By

Ludhiana (January 4, 2010): Equating the act of SGPC and Giani Gurbachan Singh, amending the Nanakshahi Calendar with the decision of excommunicating Giani Gurmukh Singh and ‘honoring’ General Dyre; the Sikh Students Federation today issued an appeal to the Sikh nation to disapprove this act. In a statement issued by SSF General Secretary Baljeet Singh it is said that Gurbani forms the bases for Sikh way of recognizing universal physical facts in a body of mathematical document, popularly known as calendar. Nankshahi calendar as was adopted by SGPC back in 2003 was based on guidelines that could be traced from Gurbani itself and this is the reason behind universal acceptance of it. But now, SAD (Badal), which is controlling the SGPC, at the instance of anti-Sikh Hindu forces like RSS and BJP, is attempting to alter the Sikh Calendar.

SSF has questioned the authority of the executive committee of SGPC to alter the Nanalshahi Calendar that was adopted by its’ General House. Moreover the term of current general house has already expired and it lacks the authority to take vital decisions.

“Though Nankshahi Calendar adopted by SGPC but it has been accepted by Sikhs living throughout the world, so now it can not be altered without making a universal consensus among Sikhs.” said Parmjeet Singh Gazi, President of SSF. “The Sikh Nation should disapprove the amendments made by Badal lobby. All Panthic organization should take up the responsibility and call a general gathering of Sikhs to find a solution as per Sikh traditions.” he added.
