Amritsar, Punjab (May 19, 2014): It is learnt that a trial court in Amritsar has acquitted the persons accused in a case related to murder of infamous police cat Ajit Singh Poohla.

Navtej Singh Gaggu Ajit Poohla was allegedly burnt to death in Amritsar jail in 2009. The complaint in this case was registered by the then Jail Superintendent Balkar Singh.

The police had named 6 persons in this case, but three have already been ‘discharged’ by the trial court.

Those still facing the trial includes Navtej Singh Gaggu of Batala, Harchand Singh of village Mari Kamboke and Dr. Harnek Singh of Tarn Taran district.

As per information the arguments in this case were concluded earlier this month before the court of District and Sessions Judge S. Gurbir Singh. The court has fixed May 16 as next date of hearing in this case.

Ajit Poohla, who had decorated himself as a Nihang, was responsible for committing mass level human rights abuses. He was considered to be part of black-cats of Punjab police, which was an undisciplined force specially prepared to unlawfully ‘tackle’ the Sikh militant movement.

Ajit Poohla’s death was regarded by the Sikh circles as proper punishment to a human rights abusers who was enjoying impunity because of state patronage.
