Protests continue over teenager’s killing in Kashmir

Srinagar (October 4, 2009): In a news published by Kashmir Watch on 03 October, 2009 it is informed that even as the district administration announced to conduct a probe into the killing of a teenager in police action on Friday, fresh protests and clashes amid undeclared curfew continue in North Kashmir’s Baramulla district on Saturday. On Friday afternoon Irfan Ahmad, 11, son of Ghulam Rasool Lone of Drangbal was killed when a tear smoke shell fired by policemen to disperse the people protesting the detention of pro-freedom leaders including Hurriyat Conference (G) Chairman, Syed Ali Shah Geelani hit the teenager causing serious head injuries. The injured teenager was rushed to SK Institute of medical sciences, Soura, for specialized treatment. However, after battling with life for hours, Irfan succumbed to his injuries.
Irfan, a 7th class student was the youngest among two siblings. His father, Ghulam Rasool Lone is an employee in the mini secretariat of the district.
Late night, sources said, Irfan was buried in a local graveyard of the old town. Thousands of people chanting “Irfan your sacrifice will bring revolution,” “We want Freedom,” and pro-freedom, pro-Islam and anti-India slogans participated in his funeral.
Report published on KashmirWatch.com with reference to Press Bureau of India further says that on Saturday, sources said, district administration imposed undeclared curfew in the town fearing fresh protests against the death of the teenager. Hundreds of policemen were deployed at the volatile old town and Cement Bridge to prevent people from staging protests. However, despite strict restrictions, groups of youth staged demonstrations and engaged the policemen in pitched battles on regular intervals.
At many places, angry protesters snatched bamboo sticks and shields from the policemen and used them for their defense while hurling stones on the policemen from congested lanes and by lanes of the town.
Hundreds of youth also staged demonstrations at Khanpora area after blocking the roads with wooden logs and rocks.
Meanwhile, Deputy Commissioner, Lateef-ul-Zaman Deva today ordered a probe into the killing of the teenage youth.
“DC Baramulla has ordered magisterial enquiry into the incident,” an official wishing not to be named told Press Bureau of India, says the report.
