Chandigarh: The Joint Action Committee (JAC) of the multiply student organisations of Panjab University here on Thursday while addressing a press conference extended their full support to Students for Society (SFS), and the students who have been arrested.
As reported by the media the students of JAC panel claimed that it was the police that instigated students to pelt stones, but also condemned the entire incident. Again expectation, it was clarified that SFS was still a part of the Joint Action Committee formed to protest against fee hike and police shouldn’t be allowed on campus with sticks and other arms.
Furthermore, they stated that the student organisation from next week (Monday) shall resume their protest against fee hike by the University authorities for the session 2017-18. They further stressed that the protest will be peaceful the and will work towards maintaining peace at the varsity campus.
“The V-C should resign if he is not able to run varsity but students shouldn’t be burdened,” said Simranjeet Dhillon, leader of Students Organisation of India (SOI), the body considered to be backed by Sukhbir Badal lead Shiromani Akali Dal (Badal) SAD (B).
“The police could have taken the prominent leaders under preventive custody, but mismanaged the situation” Vicky Middukhera, president of Chandigarh unit of SOI was quoted saying by the media.
“The police instigated students with lathicharge and water canons. After that a number of innocent students have been picked up from campus. One of our supporters Jatin Garg of Anthropology department has been hit on face and is admitted at the PGI. However, no one from the university wants to know his well-being.” Jatin Garg underwent surgery, he further added to his statement.
“We want re-investigation so that the people who had covered their faces and were pelting stones could be identified,” said Resham Singh Godara, leader of Panjab University Students Union (PUSU).
The leaders announced that they would soon meet the top brass of the Chandigarh Police over police brutality and write to PU authorities, notes Hindustan times (HT).
However, the JAC condemned the statement of SFS president Damanpreet Singh where he justified violence.
