Chandigarh: The Punjab state assembly will be discussing a resolution asserting Punjab’s riparian rights today. The decision to pass this resolution was taken during the Business Advisory Committee of the House held yesterday. The resolution would be proposed by Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal in the state assembly called ‘Vidhan Sabha’.
The resolution, a copy of which was circulated to the MLAs besides senior government officers, says the state is dependent on tubewells to irrigate 73 per cent of fields due to which the water table is declining fast.
The draft resolution talks tough on the matter. It reads that the state will not accept any decision (including by court) that goes against it. It terms the present situation as dangerous where “tolerating this injustice will tantamount to signing the death warrant of Punjab and Punjabis”.
As per sources the ruling alliance of SAD Badal-BJP and the opposition Congress have agreed to unanimously pass the resolution. However, a debate on the recent developments in the case will be held in the House preceding the passing of resolution.
The issue of Punjab river waters is back in focus as the Supreme Court of India has resumed hearing on a case pertaining to the construction of controversial SYL canal.
