Amritsar/ Jalandhar: Punjab bandh called by AISSF (Peermohammad) and the survivors of the Sikh Genocide 1984 to protest against 1984 anti-Sikh riots, evoked good response with rail and road traffic being partially affected at a few places, while the markets in various areas remained nearly closed.
In Ludhiana Sikh activists blocked railway tracks near Gurudwara Dukh Nivaran Sahib at Ludhiana for around five hours in the morning following which movement of various trains, including Shatabdi express, Shan-e-Punjab, Katiyar express and Jansewa express remained affected. The protesters blocked the tracks for 5 hours as per declared schedule.
Amritsar police arrested AISSF President Karnail Singh Peermohammad, Sikh Genocide survivor Bibi Jagdish Kaur alongwith around 50 people at around 4:30 am when they were heading towards Amritsar Railway station.
As per reports there was good response to Punjab bandh call in Amritsar, Ludhiana and Jalandhar where most of shops remained closed. Scattered shops and road side tea vendors were seen as open at these places. Road traffic had become near to normal in the after-noon. There was marginal response to Punjab Bandh call in Patiala as most of the shops remained open.
