Ludhiana/ Jalandhar (February 16, 2014): Senior Congress leaders and workers realted to Hindu community have alleged “step-motherly treatment” by the state-unit leadership. Hindu leaders of Congress party from across Punjab had convened a meeting at Ludhiana about two weeks back over the being meted out by the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (PPCC) to urban Hindu party leaders.
According to Hindustan Times [m]ore than 40 party leaders and senior workers had participated in the meeting and decided to register their complaints with the panel constituted by the All India Congress Committee (AICC) under Jalandhar MP Mohinder Singh Kaypee to look into grievances of dissidents.
Congress party is one of the major political parties in the state. This party is currently affected by intense intter-fight, with state leaders pulling each-others’ legs.
AICC secretary and Batala MLA Ashwani Sekhri, AICC member Aman Arora and Ludhiana MLA Rakesh Pandey, along with other leaders and senior party workers, had expressed resentment over the list of office-bearers prepared by PPCC president Partap Singh Bajwa.
“Representation should be fair. Of the 13 Lok Sabha seats in the state, tickets for five seats should be given to urban Hindus in the upcoming parliamentary elections,” Sekhri and Pandey had said.
As per recent reports Hindu leader of the Congress Party urged the Kaypee Committee on February 15 to allot them their due share of tickets for the Lok Sabha and assembly elections.
Notably Congress party high command had set up the committee, led by Jalandhar MP Mohinder Singh Kaypee, to hear out party leaders, who were unhappy with the constitution of the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (PPCC). Other members of the committee are Laal Singh, Malti Thapar and KL Sharma. The committee had its last meeting on Feb. 15 and will submit its report early next week.
Among those who had a meeting with the committee were Rakesh Pandey, Ludhiana MLA, RR Bhardwaj, former Deputy Chairman of Punjab Planning Board, Vishnu Sharma, former Patiala Mayor, Aman Arora from Sangrur, KK Sharma from Bathinda, Jugal Kishore, Ashwani Sharma and Raman Behal.
According to The Tribune [t]hey said the Hindu community needed to be given due representation while allotting party tickets. The leaders said the SAD-BJP alliance gave 35 tickets to Hindu leaders in the last assembly elections and 21 of them won, whereas the Congress gave party tickets to only 23 leaders. They further said the Hindu community formed 38 per cent of the population. However, only two of the 14 vice-presidents and six of the 35 general secretaries were from the Hindu community.
“A member said there was a need to give adequate representation to leaders of certain communities while nominating PPCC office bearers”, reports The Tribune (TT).
