Punjab police admit that Jaspal Singh Gurdaspur was killed by their AK47 bullet

Chandigarh/ Gurdaspur (January 27, 2014): As per information available with the Sikh Siyasat News (SSN) the Punjab police today admitted that it was their bullet that had fatally hit Jaspal Singh Gurdaspur.

It may be recalled that Punjab police had opened fire on Sikhs who were holding peaceful demonstration in Gurdaspur on March 29, 2012. The unprovocative police firing had claimed life of a Sikh engineering student Jaspal Singh of Village Chaur Sidhwan, while another Sikh youth named Ranjeet Singh was seriously injured.

The post-mortem and forensic science laboratory reports had revealed that Jaspal Singh was hit by an AK47 bullet. The Punjab police had been maintaining that Jaspal Singh was not hit by the bullet fired from any police weapon. The police went on to maintain that no AK47 was issued to any police personnel in Gurdaspur on the day of incident.

“In Gurdaspur firing case today Punjab police admitted that Jaspal Singh got killed by their bullet” Advocate Navkiran Singh posted on micro-blogging site Twitter.

Advocate Navkiran Singh informed Sikh Siyasat News (SSN) over phone that the Punjab government today (on Jan. 27) admitted before the division bench of Chief Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul that Jaspal Singh was shot by a bullet fired by the Punjab police’s AK47.

“An Additional Advocate General, appearing for the Punjab police and Punjab government told the court that recent forensic science report has affirmed that it was a bullet fired by Punjab police’s AK47 that had fatally hit Jaspal Singh”, Advocate Navkiran Singh said.

“The police has not yet revealed the name of the accused cop who had fired the bullet” he added.

As per information the police and the government sought two months’ time to complete the criminal investigations and departmental inquiry in this matter, which was granted by the High Court.

Advocate Navkiran Singh said that it was first success in this case as the police was denying the fact that Jaspal Singh was killed by a bullet fired by Punjab police.

Jalandhar Division Commissioner S. R. Ladhar in his 228 pages report submitted to the High Court had raised the question regarding use of deadly weapons such as A.K. 47 and SLR guns, while handling a demonstration by public. He had concluded that the death of Jaspal Singh Gurdaspur was result of police ‘negligence’.
