Chennai: Two days after a group of students in IIT-Madras to protest against central government’s decision to impose complete ban on cattle trade for slaughter houses organised a beef festival on the campus of the institution. Two of the participating students after an altercation with the students from Pro-Hindutva Vivekananda Study Circle group here on Tuesday afternoon were abused and assaulted.
As reported by the media R Sooraj a research scholar student in aerospace engineering department, suffered multiple injuries of the eye and face, Manish Kumar Singh, a post-graduate student in ocean engineering, suffered injuries in his right hand.
On complaints from bothsides, the Kotturpuram police registered FIRs for offences punishable under IPC sections 147 (rioting), 341 (wrongful restraint), 323 (voluntarily causing hurt) and 506(1) (criminal intimidation).
While interacting with an English vernacular the official spokesman of IIT-M stated that it was an altercation between two students and both of them suffered injuries. “The institute will conduct an inquiry and action will be taken accordingly at the earliest,” reads a quote from the statement given by IIT-Madras;s media cell.
The witnesses reportedly said that the attack took place at 2.15pm in a campus mess where R Sooraj was having lunch with a friend. A group of eight students belonging to the ‘Pro-Hindutva’ outfit called Vivekananda Study Circle approached the duo and got into an argument with them.
“The group was led by Manish Kumar Singh, who is a member of Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad. They had names of students who had taken part in the beef-fest,” said Manoj Parameswaran, a friend of R Sooraj. R Sooraj, who is a member of the Ambedkar-Periyar study circle, was confronted by the group for eating lunch in the Jain mess, after participating in the beef-eating event on Sunday. “The group pulled his friend away. Two of them held him back, and this guy repeatedly punched him on the face,” he adds.
The accuse Manish Kumar Singh and his friends were not available in the campus, says media source.
Doctors, who treated Sooraj said he had suffered an injury to his right eye as well as to the head. He was punched on theside of his ear before several blows were rained on his right eye, his friends said while talking with the media persons.
At the IIT-M clinic, students said, Manish returned to threaten Sooraj’s friends against taking the matter up with the police. Later in the evening, a protest was held by about 200 students against the incident, and were detained by the police, reports Times of India (ToI).
